About

Product management is changing. I'm trying to understand where it's going.

I'm Alan Vale, a product leader, builder, and longtime student of how technology changes the way we work.

I've spent more than 15 years building and scaling products across startups and established companies, working across product strategy, technology, go-to-market, and business operations. I've helped take products from early ideas to market, scaled established businesses, and worked through the challenges that come with changing products, organizations, and business models.

Now I'm particularly interested in what happens when AI becomes part of the product development process itself.

Generative AI isn't simply giving product managers another tool. It's changing how products are researched, designed, built, tested, launched, and improved. It's also changing what it means to be a product manager.

That raises some interesting questions.

What skills will matter most? What happens to traditional product development processes? How should product teams work with AI agents? Which new tools are genuinely useful, and which are mostly hype? And what does great product leadership look like when the cost and speed of creating software change dramatically?

That's what I'm exploring here.

What you'll find here

This publication is focused on the intersection of Product Management, AI, and the future of building products.

I'll write about:

  • AI Tools — practical experiments with the tools and technologies that are reshaping product development.
  • Product Development — new approaches to research, design, engineering, experimentation, and delivery.
  • Product Leadership — lessons from building teams, organizations, products, and businesses.
  • Industry Trends — separating meaningful changes from the latest technology hype.
  • Case Studies — looking at what actually happened, what worked, what didn't, and why.
  • Careers in Product Management — how the profession is evolving and how product leaders can adapt.

Learning in public

I don't pretend to have all the answers.

In fact, one of the reasons I'm writing is because we're entering a period where many of the old answers are being reconsidered.

I'll share things I'm learning, things I'm experimenting with, products and tools I'm testing, and ideas that I think are worth thinking about. When I have firsthand experience, I'll tell you. When I'm exploring an emerging idea, I'll tell you that too.

The goal isn't to predict the future perfectly.

It's to get better at seeing it coming.
